Firefighter sues Mishawaka over alleged sex discrimination

MISHAWAKA, Ind. (AP) -- Mishawaka's only female firefighter has filed a sexual discrimination lawsuit alleging that co-workers made derogatory comments.

Dale Francis filed the lawsuit yesterday in U.S. District Court in Fort Wayne. She alleges that some firefighters posted sexually derogatory cartoons and notes in stations to harass her into leaving.

The suit also says some male firefighters jeopardized the success of emergency runs by refusing to help her lift patients and equipment and refusing to speak with her.

Francis still works for the fire department in the city east of South Bend.

Mayor Jeff Rea declined to discuss the lawsuit.

Don't let phishers hook you

In Montana, fishing involves luring trout with dry flies in the summer or jigging in winter with tackle and bait. On the Internet, phishers consider you to be the catch, and you might not recognize them for what they are.Botnets and scammers send out spam messages 24/7, trying to bait recipients into opening an attached file that will install malware that runs invisibly on PCs.But not all spam contains Trojan horses or spyware, or links to them; some appears to be genuine e-mail from your financial institution or an online store. They urge you to check your account or confirm your account information, playing on your fears by saying the account has has been "accessed" by someone else and will be locked if you don't take action. These e-mails are phishing scams, and the point is to get you to click on a link to an impostor Web site that will steal your information.

Colorado Loses Svatos for Season

If either Jon Klemm or Jack Johnson has a ski vacation planned for lovely Colorado anytime soon, they may want to check their cancellation options. The Los Angeles defensemen laid out two of the Avalanche's top players in a 5-2 loss on Saturday; today, the Avs found out just how much damage was done. From Terry Frei of the Denver Post: Avalanche winger Marek Svatos, the team's leading goal-scorer with 26, was diagnosed as having a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. He will require surgery and will miss at least the rest of this season, the team announced today. Veteran winger Ryan Smyth was determined to have a suffered a concussion and a minor lef shoulder separation, and the team said he will be out indefinitely. The Avalanche said he would not be allowed to exercise until the concussion symptoms disappear, and the team didn't specify a possible timetable for when that might be.

Sampson leaves IU supporters red in the face

About NCAA Tournament seeds and matchups. About all the reasons players and coaches and fans care so ridiculously much about a crazy game like college basketball.

That's not what Indiana University basketball fans are thinking about this weekend. They're thinking about how a coach, an administration and even some players have embarrassed a school more than it's ever been embarrassed.

They're thinking about how they took a considerable chance on Kelvin Sampson and Sampson has left them looking like fools.

Scots do not want to end the Union, merely modify it

IT'S time. Time for a change. Time to move on. This is the last column from this writer which will appear in this position in this paper. A new and extremely challenging role on the business desk awaits.Sadly, it means no time for the glorious self-indulgence of expressing a weekly opinion on the affairs of the nation. The world of politics is a continuously fascinating one. There is always something new. Political parties take power and always, in the end, lose it. Politicians' fortunes ebb and flow. Plots and conspiracies abound. Policies evolve and change.Over time, the decisions made by our elected representatives really do "make a difference", a phrase politicians use frequently, to the lives of the poor, long-suffering voters whose interests they are supposed to represent. Politics matters. And having spent many years at both Westminster and Holyrood as a reporter – and worked, albeit for only a year, on the "dark side" as a special adviser to former First Minister Henry McLeish – politics had become like a drug.

Larry Lessig Officially Considers Run For Congress

While techies like to loudly complain about the music industry's intellectual property, tech companies would be nothing if anybody could copy software or hardware designs whenever they wanted. Strangely, nobody complains about the intrusive anti-piracy software that comes with applications.

Stupid comment. There is not one single tech company today that is making a profit from untouched 14-year old code. Copyright could be rolled back to a term of 14 years (without even the option of extending it another 14 years) and it would not make one bit of difference to the tech industry.

Oh so it looks like all those commercial Linux distros couldn't possibly be making and money with everyone, even their competitors copying their software for free.

Bipolar disorder shatters family, ends in death

For more than two years, his service record was clean; his superiors even wrote him several letters of commendation. Fink wanted a career in the Navy, but a conflict of highs and lows was escalating inside his head.

"Something happened to him in the Navy," Heather Gentles said. "He just was never going to be the same."

Fink's illness developed quickly and was brought on in part by stress and lack of sleep, said his psychiatrist in St. Charles, Dr. Greg Mattingly. Fink's condition emerged about the same age as most bipolar patients, Mattingly said, and was not spurred by any specific traumatic incident.

"With bipolar, you can go from pretty much normal one day, to the next day being very, very, very sick," Mattingly said.

Fink mouthed off to his commanders, stopped eating regularly and lost 20 pounds.

Market woes weigh on Hargreaves Lansdown

Hargreaves Lansdown, the stockbroker that floated last May at 160p, dropped below its launch price yesterday amid fears that it would issue a warning on growth with its first-half results due today.

The shares fell 9¾p to 158p as Investec reiterated its "sell" advice, saying that it expected the weak stock market to hit its flow of funds from investors. It said that its forecast target for the year to end-June of £12.8 billion under management looked challenging given that the market is off 10 per cent this year.

Resolution was the worst blue-chip performer, down 44p at 672p, hit by worries that the 720p-a-share takeover by Hugh Osmond’s Pearl Assurance could be scuppered at the eleventh hour by the Financial Services Authority. The watchdog was unhappy with the speed at which Pearl wanted to sell capital in Resolution’s life funds to repay its creditors.
